On the evening of 2nd June 2022, Cubs and Scouts from 6th Lochaber (The Braes), plus talented bagpiper Ali Berardelli, successfully hiked up Cruim Leacainn to celebrate the Queen's Platinum Jubilee. It was an event which had taken months of prior planning spearheaded by the supremely organised Amy Exeter. Thank you Amy!

And it was quite the trek! We met our eager young people in a layby near the Great Glen Cattle Ranch. Armed with waterproofs and a gallon of Smidge, we set off along a gorgeous, albeit treacherously muddy, footpath through woodland with unique views towards Ben Nevis.

During the first half of the walk, we stopped a few times to point out something interesting to the group and talk about it: a very old oak tree, an old ruin, and the particular view we had of Ben Nevis. Our group were excellent throughout. We were also joined by a number of enthusiastic helpers, parents of some of the Cubs, who did a great job of keeping an eye on the group.

The second half of the walk was characterised by heavy rain as we left the woods and pushed on uphill. It was a challenge but the whole group did fantastically well. Sean and Emma Sessions drove ahead to carry the fire pit and logs. Every Cub and Scout successfully topped out at the summit and excitedly flocked to the trig point, with the feeling of success felt by all.

Prior to this event, Sean had spent a few weeks carving our spectacular fire pit. Not only can you see the Scouting logo but also the designs unique to our local Scouting groups within The Braes. It was extremely impressive!

So despite the heavy rain and midges, we finally had everything aligned ready to celebrate the Jubilee: the trig point, a flaming fire pit and Ali our bagpiper. The Cubs and Scouts saluted and said their promises, then Ali began playing Diu Regnare. It was, simply, a beautiful and special moment. Then, Amy brought out the marshmallows and chocolate biscuits, and everyone was smiling again as we enjoyed s'mores around the fire. It was fantastic and a very successful event to be remembered.
